Beat the Heat in Your Car This Summer

Beat the Heat in your Car This Summer

Summertime brings the heat. Your car is particularly susceptible to warming up due to the metal and glass that makes up its exterior. The following tips from us here at Irvine Auto Center can go a long way when it comes to keeping your cool during the next few months.

Summer Car Hacks

  1. Your Cooling System- Get your cooling system inspected early on. This includes your radiator, the coolant condition and level, your engine oil, and your engine cooling fans. These are the most important components to your engine this time of year, as excess heat is the number one destroyer of all engines. If your car overheats, stop it immediately. Run the heater, as it pulls heat off of the engine, until you can find a safe place to pull over and park.
  1. Covers- Seat and steering wheel covers can dramatically reduce the temperature of the surfaces you have to touch when entering a hot car. Find covers that come in lighter colors and airy materials to further reduce the amount of heat they store.
  1. Sunshades- Sunshades for the windshield and windows will also block out a significant amount of sunlight and heat. These also protect your dashboard and the interior from cracking and weathering in the hot sun. You can get them for your front windshield, back windshield, and side windows for maximum protection.
  1. Battery Upgrade- Upgrade your battery if yours is older or starting to give you signs of failure. Slow cranking on starting is a good indication the heat is causing your battery to break down on the inside. If you replace it before you are left stranded, you will save yourself time, money, and spent energy.
  1. Conserve the AC- Running your AC in the summer will keep your cabin cool but will add to the amount of heat produced by the engine. The extra strain brought on by turning on your AC is likely most noticeable in older vehicles. Regardless, it is beneficial to blast the AC until the car is cold, and then turn it off completely for a while. The less you run the AC, the longer it will last, and the better fuel mileage you will get. Keep in mind turning it off and on too frequently can also strain the AC system, so you will want to find a balance you are comfortable with.
