Over time the summer heat can have devastating effects on your car’s paint. When dealing with summer heat, there are helpful car maintenance tips that, when followed, will help prevent sun damage. These tips can also help keep your paint job looking newer for longer. Here are some helpful tips for car paint maintenance during the hot summer months from us here at Irvine Auto Center.
To protect your paint you need to keep your car clean from grime and pollution. This means washing your car often. Never wash your car in direct sunlight. Use an automotive cleaning product along with a cotton mitt or cloth to wash the car with. Never scratch stuck on grime, instead use a clay bar for auto detailing. Use a dry cotton rag or a chamois to immediately dry your car after washing it.
Waxing your car does so much more than make it shiny. Applying a fresh coat of wax to your vehicle protects the paint from the sun’s UV rays. Wax also protects the paint from roadside pollutants that can cause pitting. Without wax, your paint is vulnerable to left on dirt and pollutants.
You can purchase paint protection film kits that can be used on the entire car or just the headlights. You can apply the protective film kits on your own or you can have it done professionally at an auto-body store.
You cannot avoid exposing your car to the sun while driving it, but you can when it is parked. Whenever possible park your car inside a garage or under a carport to eliminate its exposure to UV rays. Covered parking is another option to consider. If none of those options are available do your best to find a shaded area. The less time your car spends in the sun the less damage the sun can do to the paint.
