How to Adjust Your Car for Springtime Weather

How to Adjust your Car for Springtime Weather

Spring driving conditions are upon us as winter starts to fade away. While drivers have to make changes to their own driving habits, your car may also need some springtime adjustments. Spring can bring wet roads from melting snow and ice, animals are starting to be more active and may find themselves in roadways, and the winter may have been hard on your car’s equipment. While we have the luxury of living in beautiful Southern California, we do get rain and snow up in the mountains, so being prepared for when things start to melt and shift is very important. We here at Irvine Auto Center greatly value your safety, so here is a list of components to check now that spring has sprung.

  • Brakes– Wet roads and active animal life means you may need as much help as you can get while braking. Now is a great time to check the condition of your brakes and replace them before it is too late.
  • Wiper blades– If you dealt with a freezing and wet winter, or made a lot of trips up to Big Bear maybe, chances are the weather took its toll on your wiper blades. Check your wipers for smearing or sections that the blade may miss. Replace them if needed.
  • Battery– Car batteries do not like extreme cold or extreme heat. The change in temperatures it may go through on a daily basis in the spring can be hard on the battery. Have it checked by a professional to ensure its good to go. Again, while we do live in Southern California and don’t get extreme weather shifts, it can get rather cold in the winter, so checking this is a precautionary step that is very important.
  • Tires– If you have winter tires on, its likely time to take them off. You may also want to check the tread depth, tire wear patterns, and make sure they are properly inflated. Unless you are driving up to the mountains often or live off the beaten path, you probably don’t need winter tires in the first place, but if you currently do have them on it’s probably time to stow them for the spring/summer season.
  • Fluids– Check the condition and level of your coolant and oil first. If needed, check the brake fluid, power steering fluid, and washer fluid. One of our Irvine Auto Center service centers can easily do this for you and fix/top off whatever is necessary.
