The change in seasons means changes in the way your car will be running, and an improperly maintained engine will shows obvious signs of struggle. Luckily, there are a few steps you can take now to prevent any serious issues. Understand that both coolant and oil play a large role in regulating engine temperature, and that this is very important for winter time driving. The second thought you should have, is to double check your equipment to make sure you are not left wanting when winter conditions are worst. We here at Irvine Auto Center care about your vehicle, and have great service departments to assist in these steps.
Check the condition of your coolant to assure it is not dirty, and that it is full. Make sure to resolve any leaks before the weather takes a turn for the worst. Change the oil, and make sure you are staying up to date with your normal oil changes. Dirty oil will be less viscous, and cause engine wear from bad lubrication. You may also want to take this opportunity to check the other fluids as well.
Check your tires and windshield wipers. Your tires need to be in good condition, with tread that is deep enough to handle snow and rain. Your windshield wiper must also be working well. If they are not working at proper speeds, or are leaving excess streaks across your line of vision, have the issue corrected. New wipers can make a world of difference when you need it most.
Pack an emergency roadside kit. Although you may already have one in the car, make sure it is updated for winter conditions. Additional clothing or blankets may need to be added, as well as extra socks, gloves, hand warmers, water, a way to start a fire, an ice scraper, and some high-energy snacks. While you hope to never have to use these, they can save your life in winter conditions.
