Your car is one of the most precious things you own and so it’s always worth keeping it maintained and in tip-top condition. Even if you’re not mechanically minded, you can perform some simple and routine jobs to keep your engine ticking over smoothly so that you’re always getting the best performance from your vehicle.
If you perform regular checks on your car, you’ll prevent any problems down the line that could cost you a lot to sort out. You don’t need to have any qualification to do these maintenance checks either. Here we outline some of the things you can do to ensure your car never lets you down:
Check your battery regularly by looking at the connection to check it’s clean and corrosion-free and replace it if necessary. Make sure that your vehicle isn’t likely to stop working when you need it most! Check all the fluid levels including power steering, engine oil, windshield washer solvent, brake and transmission fluid and antifreeze/coolant and top it off if you have to. These are simple tasks and most fluid chambers are clearly marked for you. Regularly check the brake system and get a mechanic to inspect the brake rotors, drums, and linings when you have a service and/or oil filter change. Check that your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) is fully operational. There’s nothing worse than being caught driving in a cold-snap when your heater is not working. Inspect your lights. It’s crucial to be able to see and be seen when you’re driving and so you need to know your lights aren’t failing. Check the interior lights as well as the exterior and take a look at your wipers while you’re at it. If you have to, replace any worn wiper blades so that you’re ready for the next downpour! Check your tire pressure and tread. It is against the law to drive with worn tires but more importantly, it’s extremely unsafe! If you can see uneven wear on any of your tires, it could indicate you need to have a mechanic align your wheels for you. Check all the hoses and belts in the engine as they can become cracked, brittle or come loose when they’ve undergone excessive wear and tear. These are cheap and easy items to replace although you may have to get someone qualified to assist you. If you see warning lights appear on your dash at any stage, do not ignore them. When something goes wrong with a car, it doesn’t just sort itself out – it gets worse. The best way to prevent unexpected issues with your car is by performing the above checks on a reasonably regular basis according to how often you drive.
