Winter Car Care Tips from Irvine Auto Center

Winter, unlike the other three seasons, proves to be challenging and difficult for a lot of cars and car owners. It’s all down to the extremely cold weather, snow-covered roads, iced-up pavement and low visibility thanks to the fog. Cars dislike the winter just as much as you do however. Although we don’t get snow here in sunny Southern California, knowing these tips will prepare you if you ever find yourself needing these tidbits of information. In an effort to keep you car in top-notch shape, here are a few car care tips.

Don’t let your Battery Leave you Stranded

The one thing which catches a lot of people off-guard is a dead battery. The low winter temperatures make the battery’s operation difficult and can sometimes completely drain it out, leaving you with a dead battery. To make sure that doesn’t happen, have yours checked for its voltage. If it’s low, you may need to replace it just to be on the safe side when winter really hits in its full force.

Check your Coolant

The coolant is probably the most important fluid in winter, apart from oil maybe. Antifreeze, also known as coolant, keeps your engine from freezing in sub-zero temperatures. Always check the coolant level to make sure it isn’t low and use a mix of at least 50/50 coolant and water. The coolant was designed to work in a mix with water, so more coolant in the ratio doesn’t always mean better performance.

Check your Oil

Lastly, you want to make sure you have the right oil in your car. Oil is what keeps your engine lubricated and it’s what separates the metal bits, keeping them from disintegrating. However, not all oils are the same. Some have been designed for use in colder climates, while other have not. A strictly summer oil will get denser when the temperatures drop, losing its properties. Generally speaking, the lower the first number before the W, the better it is for winter. A 5W40 oil is better than a 10W40 one for winter, for instance.
