Most people typically know how to best prepare their vehicles before they head out on the road. However, people often forget how much wear and tear they are putting on the vehicle during the trip, which highlights the fact that aftercare of your vehicle is almost as important as preparing to leave. We here at Irvine Auto Center want you to keep your vehicle in tip-top running shape, so we have compiled a list of road trip and general summer car maintenance tips to help you next time you embark on one!

Before Leaving: Preparation is Key

Before leaving on a road trip, you want to make sure your vehicle is prepared for all road conditions. Make sure you check or replace the following:

  • • Change oil and filter
  • • Change fuel filter (better gas mileage than if it was dirty)
  • • Check condition of tires including tread depth and tread wear patterns
  • • Check tire pressure
  • • Change or clean air filter
  • • Check windshield wipers
  • • Check windshield wiper fluid
  • • Check battery life
  • • Check coolant level and condition (critical)
  • • Check all lights

Upon Return: Do an Assessment of the Wear and Tear

Depending on the mileage put on the vehicle during your trip, you may want to consider the following:

  • • Changing the oil and filter (it is easy to put 3,000+ miles worth of wear on a vehicle during road trips)
  • • Changing the fuel filter
  • • Changing the air filter
  • • Checking the spark plugs
  • • Check tire pressure (it will have likely changed)
  • • Check all fluids

General Road Trip and Summer Driving Tips

There are a few things we as drivers should always do, and or make sure we carry with us. Here are a few of the most important…

    • • Always carry jumper cables in case of a dead battery
    • • Always carry a paper map of areas you are unfamiliar with
    • • Have water in the vehicle (for you and your vehicle)
    • • Upgrade your vehicle if it is not road-trip worthy. You will spend more in towing and repair fees if you break down (We can help you with that at Irvine Auto Center!).
    • • Carry a roadside kit with road markers and other safety equipment
